How we calculate the estimate

We first estimate Resting Energy Requirement (RER) using:

RER = 70 × body weight (kg)^0.75

We then apply a dog-specific life-stage multiplier to estimate daily energy needs. Food quantity is calculated from the calorie density you enter.

The formula and multiplier remain visible so you can understand how the estimate was calculated rather than relying on a hidden prediction.

01 — Dog food calories

Check your dog-food label for metabolisable energy (ME). It may be listed as kcal per 100 g, kcal per cup, or kcal per can or pouch. Choose the matching format in the calculator.

02 — Body condition matters

Body weight alone does not show whether a dog is underweight, overweight or close to an ideal body condition. Consider your dog’s body shape, weight trend and veterinary assessment when evaluating their nutritional needs.

03 — Meals and treats

The estimated daily amount can be divided into practical meals. Treats should generally make up only a small portion of your dog’s overall daily calorie allowance.

Practical dog calorie example

A healthy, neutered 10 kg adult dog has an RER of approximately 394 kcal/day. Applying a 1.6 multiplier gives a starting daily estimate of approximately 630 kcal/day.

If the food contains 360 kcal per 100 g, the starting portion is approximately 175 g per day.

Actual calorie requirements can differ between dogs. Monitor body weight and body condition, and make meaningful adjustments with professional guidance.

Homemade dog food calculator limitations

You can use the calorie field to estimate a portion when you have a reliable kcal value for the recipe.

However, a homemade dog food calculator cannot determine whether a recipe is complete and balanced. Home-prepared diets should be formulated with guidance from a veterinarian or qualified veterinary nutrition professional.
