How we calculate
We first estimate Resting Energy Requirement (RER) using:
RER = 70 × body weight (kg)^0.75
We then apply a dog- or cat-specific life-stage multiplier to estimate daily energy needs. Food quantity is calculated using the calorie information on your pet-food label.
Results are starting estimates, because individual calorie requirements can vary.

Practical example
A healthy, neutered 4 kg adult cat has an RER of approximately 198 kcal/day. Applying a 1.2 multiplier gives a starting daily estimate of approximately 238 kcal/day.
Factors that affect calorie needs

-
Age and life stage
-
Growth
-
Neuter status

Monitor your pet’s body weight and body condition regularly, and make significant feeding adjustments with veterinary guidance.
Reading pet-food calories

-
