WELLNESS SNAPSHOT

—

Based on 7 data points: species, age, weight, activity, body condition, food type and meals per day.

Important: This calculator provides general feeding estimates for healthy dogs and cats and is intended for educational purposes only. Individual calorie needs vary. Puppies, kittens, pregnant or nursing pets, animals with medical conditions, pets on therapeutic diets, or pets requiring significant weight change should be assessed by a qualified veterinarian.

How it works

  1. Enter your pet’s basic details and weight.
  2. Choose body condition, lifestyle and food format.
  3. See daily calories, food amount, meal portions and treat allowance.

How we calculate

We first estimate Resting Energy Requirement (RER) using 70 × body weight in kilograms0.75. We then apply a dog- or cat-specific life-stage multiplier. Food quantity is calculated from the calorie information on your pet-food label. Results are starting estimates because individual needs vary.

Practical example

Enter 22 lb and the calculator converts it accurately to approximately 10 kg before applying the recognised RER formula.

Factors that affect calorie needs

Age, growth, neuter status, activity, body condition, breed, temperature and health can change requirements. Monitor body weight and condition, and adjust with veterinary guidance.

Reading pet-food calories

Look for metabolisable energy on the label. It may be written as kcal per 100g, kcal per cup, or kcal per can/pouch. Use the matching calculator option for the most useful estimate.

When to contact a vet

Speak with a qualified veterinarian for puppies or kittens with unusual growth, pregnant or nursing pets, significant weight change, illness, therapeutic diets, persistent appetite changes, vomiting, diarrhoea or other health concerns.
